Designer Interview by William Delligan: Designer Rick Dunnington’s workroom/apartment is the top floor of a Greenwich Village brownstone. Here, amidst piles of fabric, acres of sketches, and the sounds of sewing machines working late into the night, the newly incorporated and highly successful “Dunnington Ltd.” got its start. But soon Dunnington and his three, sometimes four, assistants will have to find larger quarters to cope with the increasing orders from fashionable boutiques that are selling his colorful clothes faster than they can be replaced. Although expansion is only natural, Dunnington isn’t completely happy with the idea. Several bad experiences have soured him on the mass market approach to fashion. “I design something and I usually carry the whole thing out myself-even to shipping,” he says seriously. “But a couple of times! contracted work out because we were too busy here, and when I got the pieces back, I didn’t even recognize my own work. We had to tear everything apart and do it ourselves. So why bother wasting the time and money?”
