Born in Iowa, artist and writer Michael Grumley was educated in Mexico City, the University of lowa Writers’ Workshop and the School for Visual Arts, in New York City. There he came to rest; Grumley now lives in Manhattan.

Grumley’s books include Hard Corps (Dutton) and After Midnight (Scribner’s); he is a regular columnist for the New York Native. He has had one-person shows of his artwork in Rome as well as New York City.

A roofer who once worked as a bartender, Skip Stevens is thinking of becoming an ironworker at a naval repair yard. Best case: in Oakland. Worst case? Forget it; roofing’s just fine for now.

Why Oakland? “The Pacific’s the biggest ocean-the whole Moon was ripped from it. So l figure the Pacific carries more ships, which carry more men. All those impatient, forgetful dicks. “There’s danger in numbers, but riches too. Part of me says, ‘You should be pickier, but I know I’m a big eater, a sex pig. The Pacific has navies enough to stun even me.”
